Before you move
- Utilities: Owensboro Municipal Utilities handles electric, water and internet for much of the city. Start or transfer service on the OMU website.
- Change your address with the post office at USPS.com. The official site charges a small identity check fee; avoid look-alike sites that charge more.
- Driver's license and vehicle: Kentucky residents update their license through Drive.ky.gov and register vehicles with the county clerk.
- Voter registration: update it at elect.ky.gov.
Supplies worth buying
Free boxes from stores work too. These are the things people usually wish they'd bought.
Scotch Heavy Duty packing tape (4 rolls)
Cheap tape is the most common moving-day regret. Four rolls gets most apartments packed.
Scotch packing tape dispenser
Makes taping boxes a one-handed job and much faster.
Nordic Elk queen mattress bag
Keeps a mattress clean and dry in a truck or a storage unit.
Forearm Forklift lifting straps
Two-person straps that help with dressers, appliances and other heavy, awkward pieces.
Once you're here
Get to know the place: start with cheap eats, free things to do and the events calendar. Looking for work? See the job seeker toolkit.
